Clay Shooting for Beginners: What to Expect on Your First Visit
Never held a shotgun in your life? Perfect - you're exactly who clay target shooting is for. It's one of those rare activities that's genuinely beginner-friendly and seriously addictive, all at once. If you've booked your first visit to Loaded NZ (or you're thinking about it), here's exactly what to expect.
Do I need any experience?
None at all. The vast majority of our first-time guests have never shot before, and most are smashing clays within minutes. A qualified instructor walks you through everything - how to stand, how to hold the shotgun, how to track the target and when to pull the trigger. You'll be coached every step of the way.
Do I need a firearms licence?
No. You can shoot under the direct supervision of our licensed range officers without holding your own firearms licence. We handle the safety side so you can focus on the fun.
Is clay target shooting safe?
Yes - safety is the foundation of everything we do. Every session runs under the watch of professional, licensed range officers, you're given full safety gear (eye and ear protection), and everyone gets a thorough briefing before a single shot is fired. Follow the instructions and you're in very safe hands.
What actually happens on the day
Here's the typical run of things:
1. Arrival and welcome. You'll be greeted, kitted out with safety gear and a shooting jacket, and given your safety briefing.
2. Instruction. Your instructor covers the basics - stance, grip, aim and technique - and you'll take your first shots with guidance.
3. Shooting. You'll work through different target presentations designed to mimic real game shooting. Clays climb, cross, dip and roll, so no two shots feel the same.
4. Between rounds. Relax in the lodge, compare scores and soak up the views across 500 acres of farmland.
What should I wear and bring?
Wear closed-toe shoes and comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing - the range is outdoors, so dress for the conditions. We provide the shotgun, shooting jacket, safety gear, targets and cartridges. Just bring yourself and a bit of competitive spirit.
Tips for your first time
- Relax your grip. Tension is the enemy of a smooth swing.
- Keep both eyes open if you can - it helps you track the clay.
- Trust the coaching. Your instructor has seen it all and knows how to get you hitting targets fast.
- Don't overthink it. The best shots often come when you stop trying so hard.
